Williams III is truly a unique voice in the din of same-old-same-old comic aritsts. That’s something I really relished this time around. This one was super popular though, so I didn’t really have the chance to stare at the pages as much as I would have liked. I had read most or at least some of these issues when I still worked for ToyFare and had access to all kinds of comics. Anyway, with Batman RIPing, DC needed someone to take over Detective Comics and Batwoman turned out to be a pretty good choice.įantastic, actually. Batwoman appeared sparingly but only took over Detective Comics in August of 2009, nearly two years later. The last issue of 52 came out in July of 2007. The character got all kinds of press for being a lesbian (big deal, Rainmaker was out a decade before in Gen 13 and she wasn’t even the first) and yet didn’t get her own book. Williams IIIĪs far as I’m concerned, one of DC Comics’ biggest blunders in recent memory was not taking better advantage of 52 and the bevy of characters hinted at and featured therein, specifically Batwoman. The ongoing Hellboy series saw Mignola produce some of the finest issues of thought-provoking horror comics to date, the best of which merit careful consideration and all the praise that can be bestowed upon them. Mignola's success is in large part thanks to his abilities as a master storyteller with an impeccable sense of timing and structure, and his utterly unique artistic vision makes Hellboy comics stand out among its many competitors and imitators. I recently found it and pulled it to share it with you here. Two of these texts came up in a short video Pastor John recorded in 2017. Each of them, in their own way, says God is the prize of the gospel. They include Psalms 40:16 70:4 Romans 5:11 and 1 Peter 3:18. And each is worth a close study - worth writing out by hand into a journal, worth meditating on, even memorizing. To see how, Pastor John has historically turned to a handful of key Bible texts, particularly four of them - four go-to texts he mentions a lot, about fifty times now on this podcast to date. What makes you the happiest? What are you after? I want to read the second book in this duology, DAUGHTER OF THE SIREN QUEEN. ConclusionĪside from that, I liked a lot of other things– the adventure on a pirate ship, the enemies to lovers romance, the banter between characters, and the fierce heroine. I wish the book addressed this in the story more clearly. At one point, a character comments on the sirens’ behavior (See below for details.) and Alosa kind of dismisses it like, yeah, but the pirates had harmful intentions, too. There’s also some backstory referring to the way sirens treat their victims that isn’t ever really addressed in the story. Maybe I’ve just come to appreciate the recent books where consent is made really clear. I guess it’s clear she could stop him if she wanted to, but it felt a little weird to me. When she experiences a romantic advance from one of the other pirates, it’s not clear whether she wants him to behave like he does. She arranges for herself to be captured and makes it clear (to the reader) that she can come and go from her cell pretty much at will. Once I understood how that code worked, I was a huge fan of him. But he’s also a pirate, so kind of unpredictable, definitely living by his own code of ethics. He’s so conflicted, so caught between what he wants and protecting people he cares about and doing the right thing. She’s fierce and smart and knows how to bide her time and wait for the right moments to do what she needs to do. I really enjoyed a lot of things about this book.
